Minor WHITE
(Minneapolis, 1908 – Boston, 1976)
American photographer and theorist, Minor White is one of the great masters of XX century photography.
He earned a degree in Botany from the University of Minnesota. He began his career in photography, first joining the Oregon Camera Club, then taking on assignments from the Works Progress Administration and exhibiting at the Portland Art Museum. He joined WWII as a soldier in Philippines, when he came back he studied History of Art at the Columbia University. From 1946 he started collaborating as a photographer with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
In the same years he is in touch with Beaumont Newhall, Nancy Newhall, Alfred Stieglitz, Harry Callahan, and Paul Strand. In 1947 he joined the Photo League. In 1952, with Ansel Adams, the photographers Beaumonts, Nancy Newhall, and Dorothea Lange, he founded in San Francisco Aperture magazine.
For the next six years, from 1953 to 1957 worked as a photographer at the George Eastman House in Rochester, the most ancient museum worldwide dedicated to photography. Soon he is called to run another important photography magazine: Image.
From 1955 to 1964 he taught Photography and Photojournalism at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and from 1965 to 1976 he taught at the MIT in Cambridge. In 1970 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship.
